Roughly 100 years ago, legendary architect George Washington Smith started the California movement remembered as the Spanish Colonial revival after leaving Harvard prematurely to eventually worked as a bond trader. Once successful, Smith relocated to Santa Barbara anticipating a quiet lifestyle and hoping to work on his painting habit. However, he was taken aback when everyone embraced the house he had crafted, prompting him to continue creating architectural gems for the city. He only used quality supplies from Spain and merged new and old world styles. Today Smith’s work is admired greatly for simplistic appeal and complex appearance. He is known as a founding father in Santa Barbara: generations of architects have followed his artistic pathway, and Kenny Slaught noted that the keen eye and attention to detail required to create works of such artistic excellence are truly remarkable.
